Dr. Neil Arya was lead physician developing the Psychiatric Outreach Project, providing mental health services for those with precarious housing in St. John’s Kitchen in Kitchener and engaged in the development of national Homeless Health Guidelines. He remains Assistant Clinical Professor in Family Medicine at McMaster University (part-time) and continues as founder Director Centre for Family Medicine Refugee Health Clinic in collaboration with the Kitchener Waterloo Reception House providing case-specific specialized care since 2008. He co-edited the book, Underserved: Health Determinants of Indigenous, Inner-City and Migrant Populations in Canada. He was Fellow at the International Migration Research Centre (IMRC), Wilfrid Laurier University and is currently a Fellow with the Balsillie School for International Affairs.
Dr. Arya is Founding President of the PEGASUS Institute for Global Health, Peace and Sustainability, was founding Director of the Global Health Office at Western University from 2009-2013 and was President of Physicians for Global Survival and Vice President of International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War in the early 2000s.
He was involved with the development of national homeless health guidelines and several research projects related to refugee health.
In 2009 Dr. Arya received the College of Family Physicians of Canada Geeta Gupta Award for Equity and Diversity and in 2013 an OCFP Award of Excellence. In 2011 was awarded a D. Litt. (Honorary) from Wilfrid Laurier University and the mid-Career Award in International Health from the American Public Health Association.
